Wildlife

Valentino
Valentino is a black breasted snake eagle and was brought into the clinic with a badly damaged wing and leg. The wing healed well without complications, but the foot completely dried out and eventually fell off. Because of his size he is having trouble standing all day on just one leg and lies down when getting tired. We are currently in the process of having a prosthetic leg fitted for him.
Xanta
This is Xanta, a juvenile Brown snake eagle. She was attacked by another eagle when going into a new territory and ended up with a big wound on his back. She was found collapsed, dehydrated and emaciated on a footpath in the mountain and brought to the clinic. She has recovered well, but due to a wing injury is unable to fly. She has become human imprinted and will be used for educational purposes.
Todd
What somebody picked up next to the road and thought was an abandoned puppy, turned out to be a black backed jackal. Christened Todd, he came to the clinic stressed out and scared with pieces of cloth around his legs. Removal of the cloth showed severe wounds to the legs as the self made bandages had been too tight. Also due to a poor diet of pap and meat his front legs had started growing scew. His wounds were treated with photizo light therapy and his diet adapted to suit a growing canine. Todd is now a year old, but due to his leg deformities has a permanent limp. He has been moved to the sanctuary and will be used for educational purposes.

Frieda is a South African Rock monitor and on the red data list. She was taken from people who took her out of the wild and fed her the wrong diet. This chameleon was taken by tourists out of a nature reserve and was going to be kept as a pet. Parents should use these type of situations to educate their children that wild animals belong in the wild and should not be held captive. Also animals occuring in one area of the country do not always fair well in other parts due to specific diets. Indigenous animals also require permits. This one was released in the Bushwillows area.

Douglas
Douglas is an Egyptian Goose found at one of the mines. He was treated for pneumonia, but recovered only after his other mates had already migrated for the winter period, thus he was kept inside to prevent him from trying to make the trip on his own. He has since become big friends with the local duck and has decided to stay on.
Bello
Bello is an 8 month old male serval. He was run over and sustained severe injuries to both his hind legs and his left front leg. His left femur had a transverse fracture and was plated on the same days of arrival. Unfortunately he was too weak to be under anaesthaetic too long and the other operations had to be postponed until stronger. His right hind leg was pinned a week later. The front leg sustained a fractured elbow, but started going gangrenous and had to be amputated. Bello has taken nearly two months to recover and can now finally stand and walk on three legs. Due to his age he is not adapting well to captivity and he is being moved to the De Wildt Cheetah Sanctuary were he can recover further with a minimal of human interference.
Juvenile Doves
These juvenile doves were blown out the nest one night and brought into the clinic for treatment. They were kept for two weeks until they were eating by themselves. They have been moved to a bigger aviary where they can start to stretch their wings and learn to fly. Once flying they can be released. All doves are checked for crop canker and euthanased if positive. Crop canker is a highly contagious crop infection and can also spread to owls when feeding on sick doves.
